Trouble Shooting and Error Recovery

1.0 general type errors both server and client

1.1 Problem with restarting "disconnected" clients

Problem:
When The client PC's are shut off and then turned back on they are not always found by the server. Sometimes the client computers are just not found. It seems that the server sometimes doesn't realize a client has been disconnected and still holds it sometimes, then when the client is turned back on the server says there is an I.P. Confict.

Solution:
If a client is disconnected from the server, the server instead of immediately severing the connection to the client attempts to reconnect for about half a minute before giving up and cutting off the connection. In that time if you start a new connection to the same client station with the same I.P. as the one that is still trying to reconnect then you will get a conflict. To avoid this problem with a "disconnected" client, make sure that the connection is dead by cutting it manually before restarting the client. To do this from the server choose the stop and quit option on the client that is disconnected. That will stop any reconnection attempts and immediately flag the connection as dead.

To do thisthe client table window by clicking on the client table button from the CyberStar server control panel. Locate the row entry in the table where the client has the Disconnected or Reconnecting... status. From the row entry locate the drop down list under the action column. Select the drop down list and choose the stop and quit action to manually disconnect the client to make sure that the connection is dead.

1.5 Other general type errors:

For almost all errors a recovery can be made by restoring the timer's backup data files. All timer options and settings are stored in ordinary plain text data files that are stored in two locations. The current working directory of the timer contains the current settings for the server. The timer will use these data files when it is in operation. The backup directory contains the settings for the timer from when it was originally set up. Clicking on the restore server/client from backup data files will copy over the data files in the current working directory of the timer with the data files in the backup directory. You will lose your most current timer settings, but will restore the timer back into working condition.

2.0 client timer freeze-up, unable to quit suspended mode

If you are unable to quit the client timer from suspended mode, you can try rebooting the client machine. If this still does not work you can try to remotely restore the client timer program from the server provided that you have a working network connection from the server to the client machine. Access the client machine through the network neighborhood of your windows explorer then go to the Program Files folder in the client machine and look for the subfolder Top Line Computer Consulting. Go into the Online Timer folder from that subfolder. Locate the file named copyback.bat within that folder and execute it. This will copy over the data files in the current working directory of the tuner with the data files in the backup directory. You will lose your most current timer settings, but will restore the timer back into working condition.

3.0 corrupted backup data files

If for some reason even the data files in the backup directory has been corrupted or lost you can either try re-installation of the software package or recover the server from manually rewriting the data files using a plain text editor (example: Notepad in Windows). This method is a lot more involved, but can be done. Refer to the technical details document for more information.

4.0 cannot disable auto-start of client timer program on system startup

To disable the auto-start of the client timer program run the install configuration program again, select the client timer installation option and when the form comes up which contains the feature auto-start timer on system startup leave the checkbox for this feature unchecked. The configuration program should remove the shortcut to the timer client from the program startup directory which enable it to auto start on bootup time. If this does not solve the problem, then shortcuts to the timer client program may be located in some other startup directory. This will be the case when you installed the client program when logged onto the system as a non-administrator user. To solve this problem the shortcut will need to be removed manually.

To do this for windows XP:

go into "\Documents and Settings\<your login name>\Start Menu"

subsitute the user name which you were logged under when you've installed the client timer program for <your login name> in the above directory path.

locate the shortcut to CyberStar Timer Client and delete it.

To do this for windows 98:

go into "\Windows\profiles\<your login name>\Start Menu\Programs\Startup"

subsitute the user name which you were logged under when you've installed the client timer program for <your login name> in the above directory path.

locate the shortcut to CyberStar Timer Client and delete it.

5.0 trouble executing installation script (windows 95/98)

If execution of the installation script results in a crash, remove the software package from your machine by removing the w9xrel folder completely. Recopy this folder back into your computer and execute the install.exe installation script again. If a crash occurs pull up the task manager window by pressing ctrl-alt-del and highlight the following items if they are present: mscp.exe, sscp.exe, winoldap then end these programs.
